New Podcast – Soliciting Smart People – Idiots Do Not Apply

Okay. I’ve tried doing the podcast by myself. Unfortunately doing a podcast by yourself is an extremely difficult job. I didn’t realize how hard it is to keep talking for 10, 15, 20 minutes without really having a script or a pretty focused discussion topic.

Sometimes the best option is to give up. That’s what I going to do. I am going to follow the herd, so to speak, and do interview podcasts.

And what do I want to talk about?

I want to talk about what you wish you had known when you were first starting out in your career. What piece of advice do you wish someone had told you that would have made all the difference in the world with respect to what and who you are today?

I’ve thinking about this a lot lately because I have two children who are getting ready to move into the working world. One graduating with a degree in chemistry, the other getting her Masters in psychology. They’re both going to be new employees someplace soon. I want them to be highly successful. I want them to enjoy their job. I want them to be good at their job. So, what I would tell them about work and employment?

For me, I wished someone would have told me that a title, time in the position and age have zero impact on someone’s intelligence.

When I started out I sat in many, many, many meetings with VPs, executives and people who had more experience than me and had to listen to them talk about business and strategy and thinking to myself that what they were saying just didn’t make sense. But I didn’t say anything because I assumed they were smarter. And I wish, looking back, that I had taken the time to speak my mind. I think I might’ve gotten further in my career faster if I hadn’t thought other people were smarter me by default.

So that’s where I want to take this podcast.

I want to know what you wish somebody had told you that would’ve made a huge difference in whether you were more or less successful or whether you would have been happier.

I want to know that one thing that haunts you now.
